Abstract

Young-Soon LeeThis thesis aims to analyze the conflict between the conscious and the unconscious for Prospero's emerging Self with the Jungian perspective. Prospero's island is the archetypal landscape of individuation process. Drowning is the rite of initiation, and landing on the island is the trip beyond consciousness and ego into death. Throughout the play, Prospero is establishing his balance point by overcoming his psychic distortion of Jung's ego-inflation. All characters are the projections of Prospero's repressed complexes in his unconscious. While Antonio is Prospero's alter-ego projecting his desire to rule and vicious shadow, Caliban represents untamed, uncivilized urges and desires, the Id, and Ariel is his direct counterpart, an agent of Prospero's Super-ego. The combination of Miranda and Ferdinand proves to be an integraion of anima and animus, the last and highest stages of Prospero's individuation process.
