Abstract

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to improve the method of separating syringes and needle sticks from contaminated needles or putting them together in a disposal container to prevent sharp injury to clinician. Methods: In the test, a needle-melting device (needle smelter, Neo Top, Korea) was used. To check whether the needle was melting rapidly, the melting time was measured in relation to the rate of insertion of the needle in the hall of the melting apparatus. To confirm the sterilization of the used needle residues after using the needle-melting device, the sterilization experiment was performed using Bacillus subtilis. Sterilization was analyzed on the basis of the rate of decrease in the number of Bacillus subtilis. Results: The average time taken to melt all the needles used in the test depends on the insertion rate. However, on average, it could be melted within 2 to 3 seconds. After testing for the presence of infectious virus in the needle residues after melting, more than 99.9% of sterilization was possible. Conclusions: To prevent infections caused by needle stick sharps injuries, we propose to improve the infectious-waste disposal method by melting the needle safely and sterilizing it differently from the conventional method.
