Abstract
Objectives: This study aimed to suggest educational content for companion dogs’ oral hygiene management and evaluate the recognition, knowledge, and behavior of dog owners regarding oral care education. Methods: The survey used Google’s online system and was issued to 51 participants aged 18 years and above. The survey had five, two, and twelve items on general characteristics, information about the dog, and dog’s oral care-related values, respectively. Recognition was scored between 1 (lowest) and 5 (highest). In addition, a quiz was performed to compare knowledge levels before and after oral care education using video content. Frequency analysis, multiple response analysis, and the paired t-test were performed on the data using SPSS version 26.0. Results: There was a significant increase (0.57) in owners’ recognition after oral care education (p<0.001). Additionally, the average evaluation score for assessing the knowledge level of dog owners' oral hygiene management increased from 68.9 to 73.8 (p<0.001). Finally, it was confirmed that the frequency of tooth brushing was either improved or maintained in 33 subjects (97.1%). Conclusions: To manage the oral health of dogs, appropriate oral care education and guidelines should be provided to dog owners, which will improve the oral health of dogs.
