초록
This paper explores how reading mythology and drama can help restore humanity in the digital age. Today, as man continuously and relentlessly destroys the earth, we hear the groaning of the "Earth, first of the gods." Greek mythology, particularly the story of Heracles, in the contemporary world give us the perspective to see what our beginnings were like, where we are now, and what the final destiny of our world will be like. We are reminded that Hephaestos, the smith god, could not be victorious until his marriage with Aphrodite is fulfilled. This marriage was only possible with the help of Dionysos. Aphrodite represents natural beauty; Hephaestos, metal working and craft today we might say manufacturing and technology. In Ancient Greece, Dionysos, together with Aphrodite, represented the earth's life force. What was true of Daidalos or Hephaestos in Greek mythology is also true of the modern technocrats who run our world. What answers does William Shakespeare offer our world? Ultimately, his plays are about humanity itself, even when man has become monstrous. When we are reminded that God's image exists in us, we may be persuaded to take the first step toward restoring our lost respect for humanity. As long as there is a single last survivor, a single living soul where God's breath still exists, even in the most thoroughly devastated waste land of Iraq, we find the possibility for the salvation of this world, the sickened earth and human kind as well. The last song of Ariel in Shakespeare's last play looks forward to mystical freedom, the most numinous realm of all, even greater than art. Ariel sings in celebration of the potential for art that lies simply in the existence of the physical world as it breathes and moves, even before an artist has found it or anyone has noticed it.
