Abstract

The objective of this study puts on inquiring into how novelist Park Wan-seo deals with feminine issues in contemporary society, how Koreans’ consciousness of women has changed, and how their consciousness has represented their right consciousness on women. And an additional objective consists in reviewing in detail what feministic view of literature Park Wan-seo has. The results of having investigated feminine issues represented from novels by Park Wan-seo may be summed up, as follows: First, the women in novels by Park Wan-seo tried to find their identities within the relations with their husband, children, and parents. Those women characters in Park Wan-seo’s novels who were imbued merely with the roles as a wife or a mother in a distorted way in cognizing the identity of the woman handed down from generation to generation, only show their existence as maternity. Furthermore, they recognize as an effeminate being their femininity among conflicts among women and men, developing the process of self-discovery. We can acknowledge from this that it is a woman’s real mode of living that in these contexts she lives as an independent human being, finds a genuine self, and establish her identity. Second, literary works of Park Wan-seo elucidate preference for sons, a factor hampering changes in the consciousness of the woman as well as a generalized accepted social idea, stress the abolishment of the contradictory idea women have, as least to achieve the equality of the sexes and right feminism. An integrated elucidation of Park Wan-seo’s feminine issues is expected to be conducive to understanding his literary interpretations and artistic values in a correct way.
