Abstract

Since the global financial crisis in 2008, Korea introduced a series of new capital flow management (CFM) measures and tightened existing ones. Most of the CFM measures targeted capital flows in and out of Korea via banks. The effect of CFM measures in Korea was assessed by cointegration analysis of the BIS Consolidated Banking Statistics. Empirical results find that Korea’s CFM measures were effective in curbing excessive capital inflows while the long-run development of capital flows was closely associated with those to other Asian emerging markets. The results also find that the effect of CFM measures varies substantially depending on the source country of capital flows.
