Abstract
This study examines the status of Śāriputra (舍利弗) in the Lotus Sūtra, analyzing both East Asian commentarial interpretations and the Sanskrit textual context. Vasubandhu’s (世親) Commentary on the Lotus Sutra (法華論, Fahualun) classified śrāvakas (聲聞) into four types but did not specify which type individual figures belong to. This lack of specification led East Asian commentators to pres ent various views regarding which type Śāriputra, the representative śrāvaka, belong to. Kuiji (窺基) defines Śāriputra as a śrāvaka who has retreated from bodhicitta (退菩提心聲聞). Jizang (吉藏) acknowl edges Śāriputra’s role in the Buddha’s teaching of śrāvakas, yet maintains that typologically he is a śrāvaka who has retreated from bodhicitta. Zhiyi (智顗), based on the structural characteristics of the Lotus Sutra, judges Śāriputra to be a great bodhisattva equal to Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva, thus defining him as a manifested śrāvaka (應 化聲聞). Meanwhile, the Sanskrit terms bodhisattvasaṃmantrita, bodhisattvarahasya, and bodhisattvādhiṣṭhāna suggest that Śāripu tra, based on a carefully coordinated plan with Śākyamuni when both were bodhisattvas, intentionally manifested as a śrāvaka to as sist the Buddha's teaching of the One Vehicle (ekayāna). This mani festation signifies Śāriputra’s bodhisattva practice (bodhisattva- caryā). Therefore, considering the Sanskrit textual context, this study concludes that categorizing Śāriputra as a manifested śrāvaka is an appropriate interpretation.
