Abstract

This paper examines Ahn Soogil(1911-1977)'s literary world and consciousness in his Manchurian period, especially in his first collection of short stories, {Bukwon}, and elucidates its significance in the context of national and literary history. Ahn Soogil portrays in his works the dire conditions of life and vicious realities that the early immigrants faced. His early stories--for instance, ‘Saebyuk’ ‘Byo’ ‘Wongakchon’ and ‘Mokchookgi’--are typical. These works which deal with the early period of Korean immigration into Gando show the immigrants' ordeals and harsh living conditions, their settling process of overcoming difficulties, and their ambiguous logic of survival--conformity and negation with regard to Manchurian policies. Ahn Soogil's novel is a vivid record of the fierce struggles of Korean immigrants who had to survive the miseries in the political dynamics of the two countries, Japan and China. In short, Ahn Soogil's <Bukwon> depicts realistically how Koreans lived after their immigration into Gando, and presents a new understanding of how they should live after the establishment of Manchuria, while reflecting their tenacious desire for settlement. In this regard, <Bukwon> can be said to reveal Korean writers' consciousness and prospect in the particular politico-social space of Gando.
