Abstract

This research paper presents an investigation into the poetic world of Park Yong-rae with a focus on his romantic imagination. Park has attracted attention as a local poet that built his own world independently in the history of modern Korean poetry. Two major characteristics of his poetic world are his sorrowful lyric poem style in a short form dependent on the traditional lyricism and his restrained aesthetics that embraced the modernism of modern poetry. The basic tools of his poems are solitude and sorrowful consciousness, which stemmed from his sense of loss. His sad emotions became a factor to stimulate his romantic imagination. Loss and yearning lie at the center of romance, which is the aesthetics of uniting universal emotions transcendent over the objects as one and pursuing sameness. In Park's poems, romanticism is as important as lyricism. Romanticism is both synchronic and diachronic and is oriented toward or yearns for somewhere distant. The essence of romantic literature is constant yearning. Romanticists try to reach completion by sharing feelings with "somewhere distant," "distant past," and "distant being" at a place isolated from the rest of the world. In his works, Park combined his imagination with "distant memories" and "memories of distant places" and thus embodied them. The natural landscapes that he experienced as a child became the source of his imagination and the starting point of his exercising imagination. The traces of his romantic emotions have nature as their motive, and it is the condensed crystal of his unconscious products and passionate imagination. Romanticism holds as much importance as lyricism in his works. Based on those aspects, the investigator looked into Park's romantic imagination. An examination into his romantic characteristics and imagination, which are parts of aesthetic features of his poetry, was followed by the classification of manifestation patterns of his sensibility into "manifestation of flowers and longing," and "manifestation of the moon and darkness." The findings of the study will hopefully contribute to the further understanding of aesthetic features of Park's poetry.
