초록
After opening with a negative re-viewing of the Frenchman Alain Resnais's Last Year at Marienbad (1961), this essay discusses Resnais's previous film, Hiroshima, mon amour (1959). The author argues that modernist style is wedded to substantial meaning—particularly symbolic meaning—in the earlier film but not the later one. According to the article, Resnais did not intend to re-create the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in Hiroshima, mon amour, but rather to establish a metaphor for the bombing through the character of the Frenchwoman in the film. In addition, the article argues that Resnais made the decision to make a fiction film rather than a documentary so that this work would become accessible to the American people, as well as to avoid creating a bad impression of the United States. Furthermore, the author posits a comparison between the love life of the Frenchwoman and the conflicts between France and Germany, on the one hand, and the U.S. and Japan,on the other.
