Abstract

This work will study the traditional outlooks on the disasters of nature as punishment of Heaven based on Heaven-Human Induction in pre-Qin period. The 1st Chap. is introduction, it will mention the motive & purpose of this study. The 2nd Chap. will investigate & arrange the important daters of records on disasters of nature such as insect pests, inundation, drought, sacrificial rites for rain, heavy snow, hailstorm, frost damage, eclipse of the sun, thunder and lightning, comet and conflagration from heaven or by man in Chun Qiu(The Spring & Autumn) Annals & commentaries on them. The 3rd chap. will introduce the policies on prevention & relief of disasters of nature in Li-gi(禮記) & Zhou-li(周禮), which are considered as editions in Han(漢) dynasty but their contents are estimated as the considerable reflections of West-Zhou(西周) period. Agriculture & administration according to climate and phenology in a lunar month(月令) are very important to the prevention of disasters of nature & the heightening of productivity, ex post facto measures for disaster of nature are very important to the stabilization of the people’s livelihood. The 4th chap. will study the outlooks & thoughts on the disasters of nature as the punishments from Heaven in Pre-Qin period through investigating various classics. The main contents as follows: various good or evil omens at the fifth of the nine categories of Grand Rules(洪範九疇) in Shu-jing(書經), general outlooks on the disasters of nature in pre-Qin period, some views on the international wars as the most man-made disasters, the principle of sharing each other’s hardships in international treaty of alliance, and some other things. The 5th chap. will inquire into the outlooks on the disasters of nature of the different philosophers and authors in pre-Qin period. The 6th Chap. is a brief conclusion. At present, the mankind is confronted with danger of earth destruction from climate crisis & environmental disasters, and must make an epochal turning point of skeletal metamorphosis both in consciousness & action. The author anticipate that this work may become a small aid in awakening and solution of earth destruction from climate crisis & environmental disasters. Some able students may have interest in this subject and accomplish further more deepening inquiry!
