본 연구는 폴란드 출신의 영화 감독 파베우 파블리코프스키(Paweł Pawlikowski)의 작품 세계를 알아보고, 그의 작품 전반을 관통하는 주제적․스타일적 특징이 무엇인지를 종합적으로 구명하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 그가 연출한 다큐멘터리들, 그리고 그가 단독으로 연출한 장편 극영화 <스트링거>(1998), <라스트 리조트>(2000), <사랑이 찾아온 여름>(2006), <파리 5구의 여인>(2011), <이다>(2013), <콜드 워>(2018)를 중심 텍스트로 선정하여 분석을 진행하였다. 파블리코프스키는 ‘포스트-공산주의’ 시대 러시아․동유럽의 변화를 유심히 관찰해오던 다큐멘터리 감독이었다. 이러한 과정에서 형성된 사회를 바라보는 예리한 시각은 극영화 연출에도 반영되어 있음을 확인해볼 수 있다. <스트링거>(1998), <라스트 리조트>(2000) 등을 비롯한 그의 작품은 러시아․동유럽의 체제 전환 이후 변화한 유럽의 모습을 탐구한다는 점에서 공통점을 나타낸다. 또한 파블리코프스키는 자신의 가족사와도 연관된 고국 폴란드의 역사에 지속적으로 관심을 가져 왔는데, 이와 같은 경향이 직접적으로 반영된 작품이 <이다>(2013)와 <콜드 워>(2018)라고 할 수 있다. 두 작품을 통해 그는 체제 전환 이전 폴란드의 암울했던 역사를 다루면서, 과열된 민족주의와 더불어 여러 가지 시대적 상황들로 인해 촉발된 폴란드의 어두운 과거 문제들을 과감하게 짚어나간다. 스타일적인 측면에서 볼 때, 파블리코프스키는 다큐멘터리 작가였던 경험과 더불어 유럽의 다양한 영화사적 전통을 양분으로 삼아 자신만의 작품 세계를 완성해나가고 있다. 그는 기존의 관습들을 답습하는 것에만 머무르지 않고 계속해서 창의적이고 색다른 시도를 해나가면서 과거의 유산을 극복하려고 노력하고 있으며, 이를 통해 자신만의 독창적인 미학을 구축하려고 노력을 기울이고 있다. 추가로, 10대 시절 어머니를 따라 영국으로 이주한 파블리코프스키는 이방인으로서 주류사회에 편입되지 못했던 기억을 가지고 있다. 이로 인해 그는 당사자성을 가지면서도 외부인의 시선에서 문제를 바라본다. 바로 이러한 점이 그의 영화를 독특하게 만들어주는 요소라고 할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This paper aims to reveal the features of Paweł Pawlikowski's films. To do so, his documentaries, and feature films directed by him alone - Stringer (1998), Last Resort (2000), My Summer of Love (2004), The Woman in the Fifth (2011), Ida (2013), Cold War (2018) - were analyzed. Pawlikowski was a documentary director who had been closely monitoring changes in Russia and Eastern Europe in the “Post- communism” era. The keen perspective formed in this process is reflected in the production of the feature films. His works, including Stringer (1998) and Last Resort (2000), reflect changed appearance of Europe since the economic transition of the Eastern Europe. Pawlikowski has continued to pay attention to the history of his homeland Poland, which is also related to his family history. The works that reflect his interest are Ida (2013) and Cold War (2018). Through the two films, he deals with the grim historical problems of Poland before the economic transition, which had caused by overheated nationalism and various conditions of the times. In terms of style, Pawlikowski is completing his own world of work by using various European cinematic traditions as a nourishment, along with his experience as a documentary director. Instead of just following customs of past, He is trying to overcome European Cinematic legacy by various creative attempts, and through this, he is trying to build his own creative aesthetics. In addition, Pawlikowski, who followed his mother to England as a teenager, has a memory of not being incorporated into the mainstream society as a stranger. As a result, he looks at the internal problem from an outsider's perspective. This point of view makes his film unique.
