이 글은 캐시 박 홍(Cathy Park Hong)(이하 박 홍)의 자전적 수필집인 『마이너 필링스』(Minor Feelings: An Asian American Reckoning)를 대상으로 박 홍이 착목하고 있는 소수 인종인 아시아계 미국인의 차이의 정체성을 모색하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 『마이너 필링스』가 정형화된 정체성 넘어서기를 시도하는 자전적 글쓰기로서 어떤 내용과 가치를 갖는가를 적극적으로 읽어내고자 했다. 이를 위해 먼저 식민자(백인 미국인)가 부여한 ‘모범 소수자’라는 고정관념에서 벗어나 능동적으로 자신의 존재를 인식하는 과정을 살펴보았다. 다음으로 여백의 글쓰기를 통해 박 홍이 어떻게 고정화된 정체성을 비판하면서 피식민자의 유동적인 정체성을 드러내고 있는지에 주목했다. 아시아계 미국인으로서의 자기 인식과 정형화된 정체성을 넘어서려는 박 홍의 일련의 시도는 아시아계 미국인의 존재에 주목하게 만든다. 이것은 아시아계 미국인들이 여전히 진행 중인 차별적 인종주의, 정신적, 문화적 식민주의, 자본주의에 천착할 수 있도록 한다. 아울러 전지구적이며 초국가적 자본주의 현실을 살아가는 한국인에게도 탈식민적 정체성을 인식하는 계기를 만들고 한국 사회의 인종에 대한 시각을 돌아보는 기회를 마련해준다.
Abstract
This thesis tried to explore the identity of the difference in regard to Asian Americans, a minority race that Cathy Park Hong (hereafter referred to as Park Hong) is paying attention in her autobiographical essay, Minor Feelings: An Asian American Reckoning. To this end, this research actively sought to find out that Minor Feelings contains what kind of contents and values as an autobiographic writing to try to go beyond a stereotypical identity. In order to do so, firstly, the process was examined that Asian Americans can actively recognize their existence deviating from the stereotype, ‘a model minority’ given by colonists(white Americans). Then this paper took notice that how Park Hong reveals a fluid identity of colonized persons, criticizing their fixed identity through the writing leaving blank spaces. Park Hong's series of attempts to transcend stereotyped identity and self-awareness as an Asian American draw attention to the existence of Asian Americans. This allows Asian Americans to delve into the still ongoing discriminatory racism, spiritual and cultural colonialism and capitalism. In addition, it creates an opportunity for Koreans living in the global and transnational capitalist reality to recognize their postcolonial identity and provides an opportunity to reflect on the perspective of race in Korean society.
