초록
The purpose of this study was to survey and analyze middle-aged Christian women's subjective experiences of their husbands' extra-marital affairs and thereby, determine the essence of their psychological phenomenon. For this purpose, the researcher used Giorgi's descriptive phenomenological method among the various qualitative research approaches. For this study, those who were living in Seoul and the capital areas and who had ever experienced their husbands' (aged between 40 and 60) extra-marital affairs were sampled. In order to collect the data, a semi-structured open-ended questionnaire was designed for an in-depth interview. All the contents of the interview were recorded to be transcribed by the researcher onto the paper for analysis. According to the stages of Giorgi's 'scientific phenomenology,' the process of analysis was carefully controlled. A total of 147 semantic units were discovered, and they were set into 34 sub-components depending on similarity of their meanings, and were grouped finally into 9 components of the experiential essence. The situational structured statements revealing each participant's unique individuality were categorized into 4 stages and the resources for overcoming the pain by each 5 participants. The first stage involved 'shock and denial', the second stage was characterized by 'chaos and trials & errors.' The next two stages were 'reflection and reservation' and 'acceptance and restructuring.' Then, statements about components and situational structured ones were synthesized and analyzed to be restructured into the general statements about the middle-aged Christian women's psychological phenomenon affected by their experiences of their husbands' extra-marital affairs. This study may well be significant in that it 'revealed intact' the psychological phenomenon of the middle-aged Christian women who had ever experienced their husbands' extra-marital affairs and thereupon, suggested an essence of their psychological phenomenon as a structure for more specific and comprehensive understanding of their psychological phenomena.
