Abstract
This study examined the phenomenon of parallel process in supervision along with its various conceptualizations and clinical applications. Parallel process refers to when the therapist acts with the supervisor in the same way that the client acts with the therapist. This phenomenon is based on an unconscious identification. The client's unconscious anxiety and defenses stimulate similar feelings in the therapist. Therefore, in supervision, in the process of attempting to communicate this to the supervisor, parallel process occurs. Harold Searles was the first to theorize this in the 1950s and the concept has developed over the past 60 years alongside the advancement of psychoanalysis. A thorough analysis of the development of parallel process yielded five categorical perspectives according to its origin, direction, and usage. The first was the one-person psychological perspective in which client is the sole origin of the parallel process. The second was the one-way two-person psychological perspective in which the supervisor's unconscious was involved, but the parallel process occurred in only one direction. The third was the two-way two-person psychological perspective in which the parallel process also existed in the therapist-supervisor pair. The fourth was the fantasy perspective in which the parallel process was viewed as non-real. The fifth was the triadic·intersubjective perspective in which the unconscious of all three co-created a parallel process in the supervisory field. This paper argues that the triadic·intersubjective perspective offers the most comprehensive explanation of parallel process. A supervision case was analyzed focusing on the triadic·intersubjective perspective, which evidenced the clinical application of the parallel process. This case especially exemplified the potential for mutual growth of the client, therapist, and supervisor. The purpose of this study was to introduce the various theories of parallel process, so that it may be utilized as a useful clinical tool and contribute to higher quality supervision and counseling.
