Abstract

Gratitude is one of the indispensable values of the Christian tradition, but other fields of psychology are now more often using gratitude as a therapeutic tool. This study aims to introduce the value of gratitude as a therapeutic tool based on the results of recent scientific research and the analysis of empirical data gathered by the researcher. To do so, it is first pointed out that pastoral counseling, influenced by psychology based on disease treatment models, has focused primarily on treating and eliminating problems. The reason the positive emotion represented by gratitude has a therapeutic effect is introduced using the concept of Heart Rate Variability at the HeartMath Institue based on studies of neuroscience and neurophysiology. Furthermore, I introduce five themes obtained through qualitative analysis of a 14-week gratitude diary experience of undergraduate students. This study suggests that pastoral counseling should take gratitude seriously as a therapeutic tool in order to grow and expand beyond the disease model. I will consider how results of research in other disciplines on the therapeutic effect of positive emotions can be applied to pastoral counseling. This attempt to introduce gratitude as a therapeutic tool in pastoral counseling has great significance in introducing empirical results, although this is the first report through qualitative analysis. This approach is meaningful because it newly discovers the value of positive emotions such as gratitude and joy, which have been emphasized for a long time in the Christian tradition. This study may also be beneficial for counselors who wish to use gratitude as a therapeutic tool and for pastors who wish to use gratitude as a spiritual training tool. Furthermore, I hope that more diverse therapeutic tools can be developed through interdisciplinary dialogue with positive psychology and neuroscience that appeared in the late 90s. It is hoped that the study of gratitude as a therapeutic tool in a more controlled group and a future study of gratitude as a spiritual training tool can be continued.
