목회상담에서 상관관계적 방법에 대한 비판적 재고: 칼 바르트(Karl Barth) 신학의 관점에서

본 연구는 목회상담에 있어 임상경험과 신학의 대화를 도모하는 목회신학방법에 대한 논의이다. 최근 한국의 여러 목회상담학자들이 돈 브라우닝의 실천신학방법에 기초하여 임상목회신학의 방법론을 제시했다. 연구자는 그러나 브라우닝의 실천신학방법이 한국의 상황과 다른 미국의 현실 상황을 반영하는 신학방법으로 한국목회상담자들의 고민과 지향성을 담아내기에 부적합한 면이 있다고 생각한다. 브라우닝은 기독교신앙의 경계에 서서 기독교신앙과 세속적 대답 사이의 합리적 합의점을 찾는 데 주력하고 있는 반면 한국의 목회상담학자들은 여전히 기독교신앙 안에서 내담자의 삶 속에 현존하신 하나님을 발견하고 그의 실천에 동참하는 데 관심을 갖고 있다. 이런 견지에서 연구자는 칼 바르트의 신학이 오히려 그처럼 내담자와의 관계 속에서 하나님을 발견하고 그 하나님을 따르는 실천을 위해 더 적합한 안내도를 제공한다고 주장한다. 바르트 신학에 의거하여 우리는 내담자의 관계 속에서 공감적으로 만나게 되는 하나님을 하나님의 또 다른 자기계시방법으로 이해할 수 있으며, 더 나아가 그와 같은 공감적 하나님 이해를 성경적 하나님 이해와 연결시키는 실천신학방법을 개발할 수 있다. 연구자는 또한 바르트의 신학적 관점이 도날드 캡스와 이상억이 제안한 미학적 목회상담의 관점 역시 포괄하는 시야를 제공한다고 믿는다. 미학적 목회상담의 관점이란 임상경험과 신학의 대화를 상호비판으로 보기보다는 심미적 종합으로 보는 관점으로 이것은 공감적 하나님 이해와 성경적 하나님 이해를 상호연결시키므로 내담자의 삶 속에 함께 하고 계신 하나님을 식별하고 그 하나님의 실천에 동참하는 새로운 상관관계적 방법과 일맥상통한다. 연구자가 본 연구를 통해 제안하는 실천신학의 방법은 상관관계적 방법을 바르트신학의 관점에 따라 재구성한 새로운 의미의 상관관계적 방법이다.
Abstract
This article offers a discussion of the pastoral theological method through which to guide dialogues between theology and clinical experiences, particularly in the practice of pastoral counseling. Recently, several Korean pastoral theologians have proposed clinical pastoral methods based on Don Browning’s revised correlational approach. My argument is, however, that Browning’s approach is not appropriate to contain Korean pastoral counselors’ inquiries and pursuits because it reflects the present situation and needs of American society. Browning’s correlational approach seeks to find a reasonable consent between Christian faith and secular answers, while Korean pastoral counselors are more concerned with discerning and following the God present and at work in clients’ lives. I have argued in this article that Karl Barth’s theology provides a better guide for discerning and following God in our pastoral practice because it enables us to identify the God experienced in our pastoral relationship as God’s analogical self-revelation. I have also argued that Barth’s theological perspective corresponds to Donald Capps’ aesthetical model of pastoral theology that understands dialogue between theology and clinical experience as aesthetic synthesis rather than mutual criticism. Finally, I have suggested, on the basis of Barth’s theology, a renewed correlational approach to pastoral theology in which we correlate our empathic/intersubjective discernment of God with biblical/hermeneutical discernment of God to discern and follow the God present and at work in the client’s life.
