Abstract
Countertransference has been considered as an obstacle for the therapist to overcome since Freud’s introduction of psychoanalysis. Freud contended that the analyst should get rid of his or her countertransference and function as a blank screen through which the patient projects his or her own aspects of the inner world. However, intersubjective theory and relational psychoanalysis began to see countertransference as an inevitable derivative of the analytic relationship between the analyst and the patient. This paper introduces a case of the author’s play therapy in which the analyst ate soup which the child patient made for the analyst. The analyst’s supervisor understood the analyst’s behavior as countertransference, referred to as a rescue fantasy derived from the analyst’s religious background. The analyst was eager to help and direct the child to reach growth and maturation through his intervention. However, from the perspective of intersubjective theory and relational psychoanalysis, the analyst’s behavior contributed to the child’s needs for emotional bonding and developmental change. A pastoral counselor inevitably comes into the counseling relationship with religious values and influences, even if he or she does not expose the religiosity in the relationship on the surface. The religiosity of a pastoral counselor works at a deep and unconscious level. Therefore, it can be said that the pastoral counselor creates an intersubjective area into which his or her religious devotion and attitudes enter. In this sense, pastoral counseling pays attention to the intersubjective area, which has great implications for the identity of pastoral counseling.
