Abstract
The purport of this essay consists in comprehending the meaning of voidness as in “The Shorter Discourse on Voidness”(Cūḷasuññata Sutta) and in “The Greater Discourse of Voidness”(Mahāsuññata Sutta) of Majjhima Nikāya(III iii 121) in the light of Vipassanā meditation practices. Through the present investigation the two discourses are contentweise connected with the Vipassanā meditation. That is to say, the doctrine of voidness as presented in the two discourses is originated from the Vipassanā meditation. This essay is first out to elucidate what Vipassanā meditation is all about, which consists of Four Foundations of Mindfulness(cattārosatipaṭṭhāna) and Mindfulness of Breathing(ānāpānasati) and to reinterpret the doctrine of voidness in the light of the Vipassanā meditation. As a result of the present investigation the voidness as in “The Shorter Discourse on Voidness” indicates the non-being of the objects as defilements belonging to the sphere of the past in the field of perception. When reinterpreting the meaning of voidness in the light of Vipassanā meditation consisting of sati and sampajañña, voidness is understood not only as indicating the non-being of the objects as defilements belonging to the sphere of the past in the field of perception but also the clear comprehension of the present object that is entailed by the voidness of the objects belonging to the sphere of the past. The non-being of the objects belonging to the sphere of the past is thanks to the practice of sati that eliminates the defilements. Voidness being understood to that effect is considered as the condition that causes the perception of the singleness of the present object in the holistic state of consciousness.
