Abstract
Mongolia is a small country with a population of about 3 million and has been pursuing an open market economy. Before the collapse of Soviet system, Mongolia was heavily dependent on USSR, but after accepting the market economy, Mongolia has been maintaining a close economic relationship with China. Especially, since the 2000s, export of Mongolia is greatly concentrated on China and mineral resources including coal. This trend continues to grow and the mine developments of Mongolian government will exacerbate the situation. Such a reliance on a single export partner and export item will increase the economic vulnerability of Mongolia as an small open country and can harm the stability of Mongolian economy. In particular, China is reducing direct investment in Mongolia and the use of coal resources because of environmental problem. In this regard, Korea could cooperate with Mongolia in co-development of secondary process industry, export route and green energy industry and this could mitigate the dependence and vulnerability of Mongolian economy. And through this efforts, two countries able to attain long term and constructive bilateral economic relations.
