초록

When the US-Chino rivalry began to surface, the EU and Korea cannot remain isolated to this new geostrategic dynamics. Given their political, economic, and military interests closely related to the positions and responses of these regional and global hegemonic powers, they are also forced to decide how to cope with it both individually and collectively. Against this backdrop, this paper argues that there is a leeway to overcome or at least circumvent the current dilemma. Given the normative nature of the EU’s foreign policy and its corresponding methodology, and its political power inducing South Korea’s support as a like-minded partner, the paper contends that the EU-Korean strategic partnership could be another example of self-fulling prophecy, as it would provide a social space where both parties may not be bounded by the US-China rivalry, but by their collectively shared ideas, values and norms, even when they are prompted to present their own strategies towards the Indo-Pacific. The contention of the paper will thus be testified by examining the normative nature of the EU, the underpinning frameworks of the EU-Korea strategic partnership, and the individual strategy of these partners towards the Indo-Pacific.
