Abstract
This paper describes a legal ontology that is involved to make a specification of a legal conceptualisation for the purpose of utilizing legal knowledge systems and Artificial Intelligence of law. A legal ontology is a part of ontology, that is defined as ‘explicit conceptualisations of a domain’. Ontologies serve as an agreed communication language for the agents through describing and structuring the entities and relations that need to be acquired for some domain, which enable to develop domain theories, system design, and knowledge exchange. Ontologies are classified according to the type of formalism or the degree of abstraction, and can divided by a method, for instance, EO, TOVE, Methontology, On-To-Knowledge. A legal ontology has been used as a basis for the design of legal knowledge systems. So far, many authors attempted to specify their conceptualisation of the legal domain in a legal ontology: (1) McCarty’s Language for Legal Discourse, A-HOHFELD language applying to Hohfeld’s fundamental legal conceptions in judicial reasoning; (2) a Functional Ontology of Law of Vanlente, A.; (3) the Frame-Based Ontology of Kralingen and Visser; (4) CLO(The Core Legal Ontology), LRI-Core Ontology, and LKIF-Core Ontology as recent upper level ontologies; (5) the CLIME project as a domain ontology. These suggestions are distinguished as description and categorizing of the elements of legal knowledge, which is dependent on the purpose of their legal ontologies. In our country, there are few legal ontologies for the purpose of a semantic search in a legal domain by organizing legal regulations. After the review of those legal ontologies we arrived at the following findings: legal ontologies play an important role in conceptualising legal knowledges in representation formats; it provides a foundation to exchange legal knowledges between human and computers, which can be applied to semantic searching, legal knowledge base systems, Frequently asked questions(FAQ), and automatic reasoning. We found that many researchers in legal theory are needed to describe computational formalism in their legal theoretical underpinning. In addition, in order to actually build and utilize ontology in various legal fields, it will be important to play an intermediary role of knowledge management professionals who enable efficient structure of knowledge in implementing computer technology.
