18세기 독일 문학과 미학에서는 “새로운 신화”에 대한 요청이 자주 제시된 바 있다. 이에 대한 대표적인 예로는 두 개의 텍스트를 들 수 있는 바, 그하나는 저자미상의 「독일 관념론의 가장 오래된 체계강령」라는 글이며, 다른하나는 독일 낭만주의를 이론적으로 정립한 프리드리히 슐레겔의 「신화에관한 연설」라는 글이다. 새로운 신화를 요청하고 있다는 공통점을 지니는 글들이지만, 사실 두 글 사이에는 명백한 차이점을 엿볼 수 있다. 전자가 기계적이고 억압적인 사회로부터 해방된 새로운 사회, 즉 잃어버린 사회적 통합을 다시 회복시켜 줄 예술의 사회적, 정치적 역할을 강조하고 있다면, 이와달리 후자는 근대에 부합하는 새로운 형식의 예술작품 및 그 당위성을 역설하는 차원에서 “새로운 신화”가 요청하고 있다. 다시 말하자면, 전자는 근대의 분화를 극복하고 새로운 통합을 가져다 줄 가능성을 예술에서 찾고 있다면, 후자는 표피적으로는 사회적 통합과 관련된 “새로운 신화”가 언급되는가운데 사실은 예술작품과 그것의 자율적 논리를 더욱 강화하고 있는 것이다.
Abstract
The request for a “New Mythology” was frequently noted in German essays on art and esthetic in the 18th century. Artists and scholars diagnosed the contemporary social and cultural problem as the absence of a New Mythology. The idea of a mythology was diversely identified, depending on different socio-cultural contexts related to religion, politics and art. Two texts are especially notable. The one is <Das älteste Systemprogramm des deutschen Idealismus(1796/97)> often attributed to one of the three writers, Hölderlin, Hegel, and Schelling, and the other is <Rede über die Mythologie(1800)> by F. Schlegel. Facing the same demand for the New Mythology, the two texts did not draw upon the restoration of the Greek and Roman mythology, but went on to find its fulfillment in different directions. A close look at them reveals the important distinction: <Das älteste Systemprogramm des deutschen Idealismus> endeavors to build stateless societies as an ideal community, whereas <Rede über die Mythologie> of F. Schlegel seeks to embody the autonomous art through the New Mythology.
