Abstract
This paper aims to defend Eisenstein’s aesthetics with an examination of the film music in Alexander Nevsky in response to the critiques presented by Adorno and Eisler in their collaborative work Composing for the Films. In this text, Adorno interrogates the prejudices of typical film music in the motion-picture industry and advocates a new aesthetic that harnesses new musical resources. He contends that the relationship between image and sound in film should be characterized by difference and contrast rather than similarity, as a dynamic of “question and answer, affirmation and negation, appearance and essence.” The sequence "The Battle on the Ice" from Alexander Nevsky is presented as a counter-example, criticized for completely subordinating the music to the picture without any independent musical requirements, and conflating the two media. In contrast, this study reassesses Adorno's critiques and aims to rectify misconceptions regarding Eisenstein's aesthetic contributions. To this end, it elucidates Eisenstein's concept of vertical montage and examines his perspective on the interplay between the picture and the sound. Additionally, it explores the innovative experiments undertaken by Prokofiev in the composition and recording of the film music. Moreover, it asserts that Alexander Nevsky’s film music seeks to establish a "fruitful tension" between the picture and the music, as posited by Adorno.
