Abstract
Nobel Lectures on sciences are valuable materials for understanding the science communication in that their recipients explain their own accomplishments to the public. This paper conducts a narrative analysis of the official lecture given in 1974 by A. Hewish when he received the Nobel Prize for the discovery of the pulsar, noting in particular that the narrative of Hewish’s lecture reveals the answer to the question why he justified not sharing the credit for the discovery of the pulsar with J. Bell, the graduate student who first detected the pulsar signal. W. Fisher’s narrative paradigm finds narrative in all human meaning-making activities and views human rationality as narrative-based. Following Fisher's perspective, an examination of structural coherence as an element of narrative probability in Hewish’s Nobel lecture reveals that by building a radio telescope and making observations through it, he was able to let Bell detect pulsar signals, to recognize that they came from a new type of celestial object, a pulsar, and to lead to advances in the field by helping to prove the existence of neutron stars which had only been theoretically postulated. The coherences of the materials and the characters reveal that in his lecture the materials were chosen and the researchers mentioned for this purpose of his narratives. Of the fidelity of narrative, truthfulness is established through the citation of already published papers and the testimony of those involved, and validity is secured by adherence to the method of astrophysics, in which astronomical observations and model building by reasoning in theoretical physics complement each other to establish facts. Thus, the narrative analysis of his lecture reveals that Hewish puts his credentials as a discoverer of pulsars on a firm foundation.
