Abstract
In 2016, the United Nations convened the UN Habitat III meetings in Quito, Ecuador, to define the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and introduced the UN Habitat Strategic Plan 2020-2023 for their concrete implementation. Additionally, the CityScienceLab in Germany has partneredwith UN-Habitat to develop digital technologies aimed at advancing the SDGs for sustainable urban development. The lab is also engaged in multiple initiatives to promote the “Cities for All” campaign, which seeks to empower marginalized communities as agents of social change and drivers of new urban development. This paper explores how the CityScienceLab is actively integrating vulnerable groups into the digitalization and innovation processes of urban development to build “Cities for All.” Furthermore, it investigates how the lab’s impact is influencing Hamburg's digital transformation in the construction of new urban areas, particularly smart cities, and fostering citizen participation to advance the SDGs. Through case studies of the CityScienceLab's inclusive city projects, the paper examines practical approaches for ensuring the inclusion of all citizens within a city. Additionally, by analyzing the lab’s initiatives that promote active communication and the establishment of a sustainable, inclusive cooperative system among universities, research institutions, companies, and civil society, this study identifies concrete strategies for equitable problem solving and advancing the transition to a society free of inequalities.
