Abstract
Thoreau's Walden, excelled in the alternative values of environmentalism, has drawn attention for using many original figures of speech to enhance its literary value. Analyzing figures in Walden makes it possible to grasp the messages Thoreau intends to provide here because they not only guarantee expressive excellence but also are a means of revealing the author's core messages. He uses the two years of his life by Walden Pond as an experiment to secure the basis for expressing his philosophical perspectives. While reporting on his life at Walden, Thoreau delivers his messages through various figures. He reveals his identity to be a pursuer and propagator of truth, criticizes the condition of readers who are misled by false values and suffer from hard lives in pursuit of material values, and urges them to join a heavenly life that pursues mental values. He also eloquently presents through various figures how reveries, reading, and observation by Walden Pond brought spiritual enrichment. In Walden, figures contribute to persuasive purposes by drawing readers' attention with novelty, and they open up novel perspectives on the world to present intellectual pleasure. Crucially, figures in Walden function as a practical means of the author's living and preaching a transcendental life in that they are ways of accessing reality and conveying truths that cannot be expressed in everyday language.
