사회발전과 문화: 기어츠(Geertz)의 비교문화연구에 대한 방법론적 고찰

이 글은 사회발전에 대한 질적 분석의 유용성과 한계점을 규명하기 위해 인도네시아 지역의 경제성장과 문화적 차원의 상관관계를 천착하고 근대화 이론과 정치경제학 관점을 비판적으로 고찰하였던 기어츠의 방법론적 전략과 그 함의를 이해하고자 한다. 주어진 사회의 고유한 토착원리를 해석하는데 유럽중심 모델의 한계를 지적하는 기어츠는 베버의 이해의 방법을 채택하여 사회문화적 기제에 대한 발견적 도구를 사용함으로써 비교연구의 방법론적 지형을 확장시키고 있다. 구체적인 종교 및 문화적 삶을 명확하게 설명하려는 기어츠의 노력은 현대 사회조직체의 구성 원리를 전통과 근대성의 가치변이에 따른 복합적인 인과구조로서 접근하는데 공헌하고 있으며, 사례연구 속에 숨겨진 공통점과 차이점을 규명함으로써 사회발전이론의 중요한 쟁점과 이론적 갈등을 제공하는 모태가 되고 있다. 비록 기어츠의 주장은 두텁게 묘사하기 방법에 의해 일정한 한계를 갖기도 하지만, 발전과정의 진단방법을 기본적인 탐색단계로부터 역동적인 문화적 배열에 대한 이해단계로 층위를 높임으로써 사회발전과 문화체계에 대한 방법론적 교두보의 역할을 한다고 하겠다.
Abstract
To specify the usefulness and limits of the qualitative analysis, this paper provides a methodological review of Geertz’s comparative cultural analysis. Geertz explores the relationship between economic development and culture in the Indonesian area, based on critical attacks on both modernization and political economic theory. He criticizes the domination of misleading Eurocentric models in interpreting indigenous life in the given society. Adopting Weber’s verstehen, his works display an unmatched eye for specifying sociocultural mechanism by employing heuristic devices which qualify methodological advances. In his attempts to unravel the lucid exposition of religious and cultural life in details, the most intricate social organizations in the contemporary era can be conjugated in the value of tradition and modernity. He also brings out some important issues and conflicts in the literature of development by which hidden symmetries and differences of the case studies can be unfolded. Although his arguments suffer from the weakness intimated by thick description, his study can serve as a beachhead from which to reconnoiter and then move into the dynamic cultural configurations in a diagnosis of development.
