Bank mergers, which occurred rarely in Japan until the early 1990s, have beenactive ever since Japan’s financial crisis in the late 1990s. This paper examines theeffects of the financial crisis of Japan on mergers, competition and financial stabilityin Japanese banking. More specifically, the paper analyzes how bank merger wavesin Japan since the financial crisis in the 1990s affected competition and financialstability in the Japanese commercial banking market. City banks as well as regionalbanks in Japan are included for analysis in this study for the period of 1983-2006.

Abstract

Bank mergers, which occurred rarely in Japan until the early 1990s, have beenactive ever since Japan’s financial crisis in the late 1990s.
