초록
Botswana and Mauritius are exceptions to the slow economic growth witnessed in Africa after decolonization. Britain was more effective than France in transferring its legal systems to Africa during the decolonization process. However, a study of legal history makes clear that most African countries repealed British-inspired constitutional safeguards against property expropriation after independence, whereas Botswana and Mauritius retained all of them. This paper provides empirical evidence and uses case studies to demonstrate that securing private property was the key to economic development after independence.
Abstract
Botswana and Mauritius are exceptions to the slow economic growth witnessed in Africa after decolonization. Britain was more effective than France in transferring its legal systems to Africa during the decolonization process. However, a study of legal history makes clear that most African countries repealed British-inspired constitutional safeguards against property expropriation after independence, whereas Botswana and Mauritius retained all of them. This paper provides empirical evidence and uses case studies to demonstrate that securing private property was the key to economic development after independence.
