Inequality and Growth in the Information Age: Evidence from China

We use province-level panel data to determine the extent to which inequality and internet usage affect economic growth in China. We found that both variables-nequality and information technology-ositively impact growth, indicating that these factors play critical roles in explaining the growth gap. This finding was robust to various specifications even after controlling for possible endogeneity issues. Our result suggests that policymakers would do well to eliminate barriers to Internet access and consider policies that encourage gradual redistribution of income in order to maintain economic growth.
