Abstract

The English conduct books in the eighteenth century aimed at addressing the proper behavioral norms to women, in fact, served to strengthen the traditional notions of femininity and the inferior status of women in the society. To reveal the ideology beneath the conduct books, this paper compares two literary works, Samuel Richardson's “Advice to Unmarried Ladies” from The Rambler and Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey. Austen's paraphrase of the “Advice” undermines its original moral seriousness through adapting the passage of the “Advice” for ironic effects, which serves to question and resist the moral messages and the patriarchal assumptions beneath the prescriptive conduct books.
