국문초록 내용. 이 논문은 『아서 왕궁의 코네티컷 양키』에서 테크놀로지가재현되는 방식을 분석한다. 기존의 비평은 주로 이 소설을 중세 영국의 봉건제와 19세기 미국의 테크놀로지 간의 대립 구도 속에서, 트웨인이 행크라는 인물을 통해 봉건제의 구습과 악폐를 비판하는 것으로 분석하거나, 19세기 산업사회의 비인간성을 지적하는 소설로 읽어왔다. 그러나 이 논문에서는 봉건제 비판이나 산업사회 비판, 혹은 양비론으로 이 소설을 읽기보다는, 이 소설에서 테크놀로지 혹은 인간이 테크놀로지를 바라보는 관점이 어떻게 재현되고 있으며, 이것이 어떤 점에서 문제적인지를 밝힌다. 즉, 19세기 미국에서 중세 영국으로 건너간 행크가 드러내는 문제는 단순히 19세기 미국 문명이 대량 살상무기를 통해 인간을 무차별 살상하는 데 그치는 것이 아니다. 문제는 행크가 가진 테크놀로지에 대한 맹목적 태도가 사실상 중세 영국민들이 가진 구습과 악폐에 대한맹신과 맞닿아 있다는 점이다. 트웨인이 중세 영국과 19세기 미국이라는 두 시공간을 대립시키는 이유는, 테크놀로지에 대한 과도한 맹신은 구습과 악폐에 대한 중세의 맹신과도 궁극적으로 전혀 다르지 않다고 바라보기 때문이다. 또한과학이라는 미명 하에 저질러지는 일련의 일들이 이성과 합리를 기반으로 한것이 아니라 오히려 전근대적인 맹신에서 기인한다는 것을 제시하기 위함이다.
Abstract
This article analyzes the way technology is represented in A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court. Prior studies have read this novel as one that criticizes the old customs and evils of feudalism, mainly through a character named Hank, or points out the inhumanity of industrial society in the 19th century America. Rather than reading this novel as criticism of feudalism or criticism of industrial society, however, this article examines how the attitude of men toward technology in this novel is described, and in what respects it is problematic. The problems revealed by Hank, who moved from the 19th century America to medieval England, are not simply that the 19th century American civilization indiscriminately kills a great number of people through weapons of mass destruction. The problem is that Hank’s blind faith in technology is actually in line with a blind faith in the old customs and evils the British people in the Middle Ages have. The reason why Twain contrasts the two time and spaces, medieval England and the 19th century America, is to suggest that the excessive blind faith in technology is ultimately no different from the medieval blind faith in the old customs and evils. Ultimately, Twain suggests in this novel that a series of events committed in the name of science are not based on reason, but rather on pre-modern blind faith.
