Abstract

The colonial liberalism was free from a feudal order suppressing the personal freedom and the imperialist order. That is the power which is in pursuit of racial self-determination and self-expression in the political community such as a nation and a country; it also establishes the political, social, cultural and practical logic, not a fixed concept in the reality of colony. Nevertheless, the literature in this period mainly explains the perspective of nationalism not liberalism however it has some limitations to explain the nation represented by the primary agent in a group and the independent inner side of individual, as being seen in the example of Sin Chae-Ho and Lee, Kwang-su. Lee, Kwang-su suggests a model of human recognizing the inner side off from the traditional ethics. This value neutrality ‘person’ off from the Neo-Confucianism is born as a result from the acceptance of Western liberalism. Most of the time, if the educated intellectuals accept the concept of freedom based on understanding of human being limited the material and biological desire founded in the theory of social evolution, but Lee, Kwang-su explores the inner side in the light of modernity based on the various desires of individuality. While as Shin, Chae-ho keeps the track to get the freedom through the people in armed struggle, being against the foreign power in the point of view in the nationalism. He believes that literature which infuses patriotism and the racial spirit into the heart is the tools to obtain the freedom, while Lee is focusing that the inner autonomy is emphasizing the social function, insisting the effectiveness on the literature. He has hopes for the establishment of a national State, and image the ideology of liberalism against the imperialism for Japan. The liberals at that time cannot help selectively accepting along the practical goals and realistic conditions, not directly accepting the Western liberalism. The challenge of political in liberalism leaves the dilemma for national resistance toward imperialism and being free from ruling for the feudal structures, since then it makes a impact on the colonial society and modern literature overall as well as ranging from socialism
