Abstract

This study examines Kate Chopin's The Awakening as Edna Pontellier's Bildungsroman. Chopin, in The Awakening, deals with the process of Edna's pursuing her own life as a human being and painter with restoring her identity she lost in the past. At the beginning of the work, Edna is a 28-year-old woman, married six years, mother of two children. Edna enjoys a stable economic wealth under the protection of the wealthy businessman husband who loves children and is devoted to her. However, in the summer, the background of The Awakening, Edna recognizes her double nature, escapes from her self-centered life, and experiences ontological solitude while realizing the world outside. Ultimately Edna leaves her husband and confronts solitude as a human being and painter, not as a wife and mother, but she can not unite herself with the world outside. Therefore, her growth stops there.
