Abstract
This paper provides an in-depth analysis of how Percy Bysshe Shelley’s liberal ideals and ethical views are intertwined in his 1821 drama Hellas. Significant attention is also given to his 1818 sonnet “Ozymandias,” particularly in its thematic relation to Hellas. Adopting the narrative structure from Aeschylus’s tragedy The Persians, Shelley depicts the war between the Ottoman Turks and the Greek rebels from Sultan Mahmud’s perspective. The article examines Shelley’s portrayal of freedom and ethics in Hellas, emphasizing that for him, the achievement of true, lasting freedom excludes the unethical display of emotions, such as hatred, violence, and revenge. It is posited that Greek victories and independence lacking in ethical values are meaningless as they fail to reflect the ideals of freedom. Shelley asserts that any despotic regime, which denies the true essence of existence─i.e. freedom, is destined to collapse, akin to the colossal statue of Ozymandias. This principle is universal, applicable across all nations and eras. Shelley envisions humanity’s continual advance towards a future Hellas, where the spirit of freedom, ethical living, and the power of imagination ideally converge. The paper highlights the enduring relevance of Shelley’s message, underscoring its significant implications for modern society.
