This paper aims to examine the structural fluidity of the South Korean new-comer immigrant community in Qingdao, China. In recent years, this community has shown unusually high instability and mobility: many Korean companies closed their factories in Qingdao and either returned to Korea or moved to other locations; small businesses run by Korean immigrants have shown a high turnover rate and mobility. I argue that this trend is not simply a temporary and irregular phenomenon caused by the recent global economic crisis, but a structural fluidity formed by, on one hand, unavoidable changes in international division of labor following China’s rapid economic growth, and on the other by sharpened competition between small businesses targeting Korean customers. Korean residents in Qingdao oscillate between temporary sojourners and long-term immigrants, as they daily experience the structural fluidity which accompanies transnational migration in the age of globalization.
