17세기 스페인 비극과 영국 비극의 비교 연구: 로뻬의 『아말피 공작부인의 집사』와 웹스터의 『아말피의 여공』을 중심으로

본 연구에서는 로뻬의 비극 『아말피 공작부인의 집사』와 웹스터의 『아말피의 여공』을 극이론적인 측면과 주제적인 측면에서 상호 비교 분석해봄으로써 그유사성과 상이성을 구체적으로 규명해보고자 한다. 로뻬의 『아말피 공작부인의 집사』는 아리스토텔스주의를 추구하여 플롯 중심의 비극성을 창출하고 있고, 웹스터의 『아말피의 여공』은 셰익스피어 비극에서처럼 성격 중심의 비극성을창출하고 있다. 이는 주제상의 차이로 이어져서 로뻬의 『아말피 공작부인의 집사』에서는 인간정신의 위대함을 나타내고 있고, 웹스터의 『아말피의 여공』에서는 남성중심의 가부장적 사회의 폐단을 고발하고 있는 것이다. 두 연극의 이러한 비극성 창출의 방식과 주제상의 대칭은 당연할 수밖에 없다. 인간정신의 위대함을 강조하는 플롯 중심의 비극을 통하여 사회적 부당함과 부조리를 나타낼수는 없는 것이고, 또한 상대적 비극성을 나타내는 성격 중심의 비극을 통하여 인간정신의 위대함을 호소할 수는 없기 때문이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the similarities and differences between Lope’s tragedy El Mayordomo de la duquesa de Amalifi and Webster’s tragedy The Duchess of Malfi in terms of theater theory and subject matter. Lope’s El mayordomo de la duquesa de Amalifi pursues Aristotelism, creating plot-oriented tragedies, and Webster’s The Duchess of Malfi, as in Shakespeare’s tragedies, creates character-centered tragedies. This leads to subject differences, representing the greatness of the human spirit in Lope’s El Mayordomo de la duquesa de Amalifi, while Webster’s The Duchess of Malfi is accusing the male-centered patriarchal society of breaking up. This method of creating tragedy in the two plays and the theme symmetry must be taken for granted. This is because social injustice and absurdity cannot be expressed through plot-centered tragedies that emphasize the greatness of the human spirit, nor can we appeal to the greatness of the human spirit through personality-centered tragedies that represent relative tragedy.
