초록
This study first analyzed the association between sunshine duration and traffic accidents, and then investigated whether the association between the two variables differs by ages(≤59 and 60≤). We only used traffic accident data of the perpetrator driver during the summer (June-August) of 2018-2020 in five research areas (SeoulIncheon, Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, and Gwangju). We separately employed generalized additive models for each city, and then we derived comprehensive results using the meta-analysis. In the statistical analysis, seasonal and annual changes of traffic accident, maximum daily temperature, precipitation, maximum daily wind speed, duration of heat waves, duration of tropical nights, and days of the week were used as confounding variables. As a result, the relative risk (RR) of traffic accidents increased with increases in the duration of sunshine in all cities and ages. It was not clear who is the more vulnerable group, however, the RRs of young drivers in Seoul and Busan were significantly higher than that of the elderly. The RRs of young drivers were 1.07 (1.09 to 1.05) and 1.06 (1.10 to 1.02) at the 95% percentile of sunshine hours, respectively. The results of the study showed that it is necessary to warn drivers of the risk of traffic accidents when daylight hours increase.
