『판관부인』에서 인물의 내면묘사를 위한 자유화법

본 연구에서는 스페인 자연주의 소설로 평가받는 『판관부인』에서 작가 끌라린이 보다 직접적이면서도 객관적인 인물의 내면묘사를 위해 사용한 자유간접화법과 자유직접화법을 분석해보고자 한다. 끌라린은 이러한 자유화법을 통해 전통적인 사실주의 소설에서 주로 사용되던 ‘말하기와 듣기’ 중심의 전지적 서술자에서 인물의 체험과 내면세계를 직접 전달하는 전지적 서술자로, 보다 근대적인 서사기법으로 발전시켰다 할 수 있다. 『마담 보바리』에서 플로베르는 다음성적 특징을 지닌 자유간접화법을 통해 인물의 내면세계를 심도있게 표현했으며, 플로베르에게서 문학적 영향을 받은 끌라린 또한 『판관부인』에서 이러한 자유간접화법을 시도했다. 끌라린은 이러한 자유간접화법을 ‘잠정적 문체’ 또는 ‘의식에 매몰된 언어’라고 설명했으며, 그와 함께 대화나 내적독백과 같이 인물의 개인적인 목소리를 발화부호 없이 직접적으로 구사하는 자유직접화법 또한 적극적으로 활용하여 인물의 내면 묘사와 심리 변화를 더욱 다양하면서도 객관적으로 독자들에게 전하고자 노력했다.
Abstract
In this study, we intend to analyze the free indirect discourse and free direct discourse used in direct description of characters in La Regenta. The technique of free discourses allows Clarín to look into the inner world of the characters, expressing their thoughts and reflections. For Clarín, the author is someone who is able to see better what happens inside the mind of the character than the character himself. The author is omniscient in this case so that the reader will see everything through the eyes of the writer. The narrator is above the characters he creates. Therefore, the narrator has the best perspective, a more extensive field of vision than his characters. And these views suggest that this use of free discourses almost completes impersonality and acquires the greatest possible objectivity and reality with an intense feeling of truth. Besides the omniscient perspective, the narrator takes on an ‘eco’ aspect, in which the narrator sinks into the character so that it becomes a mere echo of his feelings, thoughts and words. And these perspectives are changed and altered at all times, creating two different types of language. With the use of free discourses, Clarín shows great knowledge of human psychology.
