초록
The purpose of this study is to elucidate the spatio-temporal characteristics of the occurrence of thermodynamic Föhn phenomenon in the Republic of Korea and their relevant atmospheric circulation patterns. Surface observational data show that the thermodynamic Föhn phenomena in the Republic of Korea commonly occur in the vicinity of major mountainous ridges across the Korean peninsula when prevailing winds are forced to rise due to the orographic effects. The frequency of thermodynamic Föhn phenomenon is highest around the Taebaek mountain ridge, but it is also frequently observed in the lee-ward side of other highly-elevated alpine regions such as the Sobaek mountain ridge and Halla mountain. It is also notable that thermodynamic Föhn phenomena causing warming in the eastern coastal regions occur frequently in summer, contributing to enhancing the intensity of extreme high-temperature events such as tropical nights and heat waves. According to the analysis of synoptic climate patterns, it is concluded that not only orographic effects but also the relative positions and coupled patterns of high and low pressure systems around the Korean Peninsula affect the spatio-temporal patterns of the occurrence of extreme thermodynamic Föhn phenomenon in the Republic of Korea.
