Abstract

In the 1960s and 1970s, Mexican-Americans produced posters and murals with strong social messages in their neighborhoods, called the Chicano Art Movement. The 1960s were a period of strong resistance among young people against established culture around the world, and Chicano art history has also been understood as a culture of resistance rather than being studied in the main stream of art history. This study re-examined Chicano art, which had been read only as a racial resistance, in the paradigm of public art. In Chicano art, community practices such as collaboration are emphasized more than resistance. This is more of a multi-layered and complex resistance pervading a post-modern society than a resistance in a single argument of ethnicity. Chicano art, which covers a wide range of genres and media including posters and murals, performance, graffiti, art workshops with locals, interaction with experts and residents, and art education programs for the general public, is an example of a 21st century cultural community.
