Abstract

· Research topics: The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of hearing impairment among older adults and its sub-factors of hearing impairments (social/situational and emotional aspects) on cognitive function. · Research background: The theory of disability expansion states that aging-related functional limitations could lead to potential diseases or disabilities. Prior research has provided empirical information regarding the relationship between sensory impairments, including hearing impairments, and cognitive function. · Differences from prior research: The significance of this study lies in that it examines the level of cognitive impairment and explores the association between sub-factors of hearing impairment and cognitive function. · Research method: Using data from a survey administered in 2023 to 253 older adults over 65, multiple regression analysis and quantile regression analysis were performed in this study. · Research results: Multiple regression analysis results indicated that older adults' hearing loss significantly affected their cognitive function. Furthermore, it was found that only hearing impairment with an emotional aspect had an effect on cognitive function. The results of the quantile regression analysis demonstrated that, the emotional aspect of hearing impairment only affected the lowest 0.1 quantile and the middle 0.5 quantile, whereas social/situational aspect of hearing impairment affected the middle 0.5 quantile and the high 0.9 quantiles of cognitive function. · Contribution points and expected effects: This study provides recommendations on integrated healthcare interventions and expanded support for assistive devices to address cognitive impairment in older adults based on the research findings.
