Abstract
· Research topics: This study investigates the influence of self-esteem on the quality of life among middle-aged women participating in lifelong education, with particular attention to the mediating role of work-life balance in this relationship. · Research background: Middle-aged women often experience a decline in quality of life as they simultaneously navigate various life roles, including career transitions, family responsibilities, and personal development. In this context, lifelong education is gaining attention as a key strategy to restore self-esteem and reinforce identity. Self-esteem directly affects quality of life and also functions as a psychological resource that can mediate and regulate work-life balance. · Differences from prior research: Whereas prior studies have examined the fragmented relationships between lifelong education, self-esteem, and quality of life, this study distinguishes itself by structurally verifying the mediating effect of work-life balance in the relationship between self-esteem and quality of life among middle-aged women. This approach offers more nuanced theoretical and practical insights into how participation in lifelong education impacts quality of life. · Research method: A survey was conducted with 186 middle-aged women participating in lifelong education programs across Korea. The study analyzed the impact of self-esteem on quality of life and empirically tested the mediating effect of work-life balance using STATA 16. Multiple regression analysis and mediation analysis were employed to validate the proposed model. · Research results: The analysis revealed that positive self-esteem had a significant positive effect on both quality of life and work-life balance. Work-life balance also significantly influenced quality of life. Moreover, work-life balance was found to partially mediate the relationship between positive self-esteem and quality of life. Negative self-esteem, however, did not have a statistically significant effect. · Contribution points and expected effects: This study provides empirical evidence for the mechanisms underlying quality of life improvement in middle-aged women. By analyzing the structural relationships among self-esteem, work-life balance, and quality of life, the findings underscore the importance of enhancing positive self-esteem and supporting role balance in lifelong education programs. The results offer practical guidance for developing tailored educational interventions and policy initiatives to promote psychological well-being and self-actualization among middle-aged women.
