Abstract

·Research topics: This study aims to explore the meaning and role of fan reading in Shakespeare studies. ·Research background: The expansion of digital platforms and fan communities has created an environment in which readers are not merely passive recipients but active interpreters and creative participants. Within this transformation, Shakespeare’s texts function less as fixed classical legacies than as cultural products continually reproduced. ·Differences from prior research: Moving beyond canon-centered and authoritative interpretations, this study analyzes how reader participation and reinterpretation generate new possibilities in the contemporary reception of Shakespeare’s works. ·Research method: Through textual analysis and an examination of fan communities, digital platforms, and creative adaptations, the study compares the interaction between traditional interpretations and fan readings. ·Research results: Fan reading was found to be not merely a form of reader response but a creative interpretive practice that reconstructs texts and produces new meanings. Ultimately, the study demonstrates that Shakespeare is not a static canonical legacy but a text continually reinterpreted within contemporary identities and cultural contexts. ·Contribution points and expected effects: This research contributes by shifting the paradigm of Shakespeare studies from a text–author focus to one centered on the interaction among text, reader, and culture. It also opens an interdisciplinary horizon that connects Shakespeare studies with digital culture, fandom studies, postcolonialism, and gender studies.
