Abstract

This article examines how women are criticized and otherized in the development of the snobbish success myth depicted in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby. As the proprietor of an “ordinary” desire that can never be seen as great in itself, he becomes a “great” being only by positively joining forces with Nick, the ethical center of the novel, and by negatively cutting off Daisy, a female figure representing the moral fall of the world. The mechanism of genderization that works in this novel is contempt for indulgent new women and suppression of the homosexual. Eventually, hatred and contempt for women in this novel progresses to a male solidarity of loose compassion, empathy, and anxiety centered on the dead Gatsby.
