초록
Nie Yi-zhong(zi, Tan-zhi坦之, 837?-887?), a poet of the Late Tang, was a native of Zhong-du中都(modern Henan). Nie Yi-zhong passed the jin-shi examination in 871, and in his later days held a minor post in Hua-yin華陰(Shan-xi). His provincial life kept him in close touch with the people and much of his verse reflects their concerns and hardships. This thesis aims to analyze the themes of his poetry. Nie Yi-zhong’s 36 extant poems, nearly all of which consist of Gu-feng古風(Old-Manner) and Yue-fu樂府 style with five-word lines, can be divided into five groups. The first group revealed the sufferings of the farmers due to the heavy tax burdens. The second one satirized the misdeeds of the privileged class, namely aristocrat, powerful family, and young nobleman. The third one portrayed the sorrow and resentment of the women and girls of a household. The fourth one showed a historical lesson through the medium of poem on history. The fifth one expressed his sorrow of the frailty of life. Nearly all of his poetry have a close relation to showing the social inconsistency or reflecting the pain of the common people. It is rarely to find to poets who wrote so many social poems in simple and plain terms like Nie Yi-zhong of the Late Tang poets. It is considered that this distinction of his poetical style can give him his place as a major realist in the history of the Late-Tang.
