Abstract

The history of stone pagodas in Korea has been studied mainly during the Unified Silla period, when the standard stone pagodas began to be built for the first time, and the Goryeo period, when the number of stone pagodas increased dramatically. During the Joseon Dynasty, the construction of stone pagodas, a representative sculpture of Buddhism, plummeted in the aftermath of the advocating Confucianism and restraining Buddhism policy, and the number of pagodas reached only about 30. Later, in the modern period from the 19th century to the liberation of Korea, stone pagodas continued to be built, numbering more than 130. However, the modern era pagodas have been viewed as a product of Japanese colonial legacy and have been negatively regarded as ‘Japanese style’, and there has been little attempt to study them. This paper aims to reveal the continuity of Korean traditional stone pagoda construction in the modern period, which has been neglected in the history of Korean stone pagodas, through the modern period stone pagodas in Busan. Busan was the first port to be opened, and the first Japanese Buddhist missionary temple to be established after the opening of the port, and it was the area with the highest concentration of Japanese people during the Japanese colonial period. The number of modern-era stone pagodas is also the highest of any other region except Seoul. These factors mean that Busan's modern stone pagodas, as the standard of modern stone pagodas distributed nationwide, are the most suitable to examine as a trend of modern stone pagodas. The characteristics of modern stone pagodas in the Busan area were examined in two directions: openness in terms of external Japanese influences, and uniqueness in terms of internal exchange with Joseon stonework. In the area of uniqueness, particular attention was paid to the affinity with mausoleums stonework.
