이 글은 가봉태실비에 관련된 자료를 분석하여 조선왕조 태실의 변화 과정을 살펴보는 데 주목적이 있다. 보통 가봉태실은 국왕이 등극하면, 석물을 갖추어 장식하고 비석을 세운 것으로 알려져 있다. 그러나 가봉태실비는 태실의 다른 석물과 달리 건립 순서가 일정하지 않고, 수리와 재건 등 다양한 변수에 연유하여 건립된 사실을 주지할 필요가 있다. 세조 가봉태실비는 정변으로 집권한 세조와 그의 공신들이 정치적 필요에 따라 건립한 비석이었다. 비석에는 세조의 겸손ㆍ검소한 덕망을 찬양하는 문장이 새겨졌고, 가봉과 관련된 정보는 들어가지 않았다. 따라서 세조 태실 앞에 서 있는 해당 비석은 가봉태실비로 분류할 수는 없겠으나, 후대에 태실 옆에 비석을 세운다는 예시를 남겼다는 점에서 胎室史的 의미가 있었다. 이렇게 시작된 가봉태실비의 역사는 성종~선조 시기를 거치면서 점차 기본적인 양식이 갖추어졌다. 그러나 임진왜란의 영향 때문인지 인조와 효종의 태실은 가봉되지 못하였다. 아마도 두 사람의 태는 제대로 보존되지 못한 것으로 짐작되며, 자연스레 가봉 절차에 대한 인식도 잊어졌다. 현종 때 가봉에 대한 건의가 이루어져 다시 부각됐고, 숙종 때 태실 가봉과 수리 작업이 활발하게 진행되었다. 이러한 사례를 이어받은 영조는 선왕인 경종과 본인의 태실을 가봉하고, 다음으로 선대 국왕 태실에 대한 대대적인 수리를 진행하였다. 그리고 사업 결과, 각 태실에 가봉태실비가 初建ㆍ加建ㆍ改建되었다. 이러한 영조 시기의 작업 결과, 지금 현대인이 보는 가봉태실의 전체적인 구조가 비로소 완성된 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to examine the process of change in the Royal Placenta Chamber of the Joseon Dynasty through the analysis of related data of Royal Placenta Chamber Monument. Usually, Royal Placenta Chamber is known to decorate stone monuments and set up gravestones when the king is crowned. However, it is important to note that unlike other Royal Placenta Chamber Monument in the Taesil, the order of construction is not constant and was built due to various variables such as repair and reconstruction. King Sejo Royal Placenta Chamber Monument was a monument built by King Sejo and his contributors for political needs. A sentence was engraved on the monument to praise King Sejo's humble and frugal virtue, and no information related to Gabong(加封) was included. Therefore, it cannot be called Royal Placenta Chamber Monument, but it was significant in that it left an example of a monument erected next to Placenta Chamber in the later generations. The history of Royal Placenta Chamber Monument, which began in this way, gradually became a basic style through the period of King Seongjong and Seonjo. However, due to the influence of the Imjin War, the Placenta Chamber of King Injo and King Hyojong could not be installed. Perhaps the umbilical cord of the two was not properly preserved, and naturally, the perception of the Gabong procedure was forgotten. During the reign of King Hyeonjong, the proposal for Gabong was made and highlighted again, and during the reign of King Sukjong, Taesil Gabong and repair work were actively carried out. Following this example, King Yeongjo made a large-scale renovation of the previous king's Placenta Chamber with Gyeongjong, the predecessor, and his Placenta Chamber. And as a result of the project, Royal Placenta Chamber Monument was newly installed, re-installed, additionally installed in each Placenta Chamber. As a result of the work of the King Yeongjo period, the overall structure of Royal Placenta Chamber, which modern people now see, was completed.
