Abstract
This study analyzes Ivan Turgenev’s First Love from a cultural semiotic perspective, focusing on the untranslatability of emotion. The novella repeatedly stages the symbolic acts of aristocratic society - duel, confession, and authority - yet none of them are realized, thus generating a distinctive structural tension. The paper argues that this structure of non-occurrence serves as a core principle defining the emotional texture of the text. According to Yuri Lotman’s cultural semiotics, meaning is produced only within the interrelations of a semiotic system. Vladimir, the protagonist of First Love, occupies a liminal position: as a minor and as one who confronts his own father as a rival, he cannot fully enter the established social code. Consequently, his emotions remain socially untranslated: the duel is exhausted in repetitive acts of imagination, and emotion is expressed not through language but through silence. The illicit relationship between Zinaida and the father simultaneously collapses two semiotic systems - those of romantic love and patriarchal order - leaving Vladimir in a state of unutterable shock. Silence is not merely the absence of language but the only expressive mode that capable of revealing untranslatable emotion. By positioning Vladimir at the boundary of the semiotic system, Turgenev explores how emotion arises and endures precisely where language and social action cease to function.
